I just could not resist.

We had settled into our room near the Gold Coast area of eastern Australia, recovering from a 33-hour trip and planning our first full day Monday. Looking at a Queensland state map we picked up at the regional airport, I couldn’t believe my eyes.

Did you just growl at me?

A neighbor couple both have children from previous marriages. His are grown and gone. She has a pre-teen son and a daughter just starting college, both of who usually live with their father but who spent the summer here with their mother.

Mom told me the other day the kids were leaving, the daughter to college and the son back to his dad for the start of school. “And I’m having a little trouble with it,” she said. “It’s been nice having him around.”

Feeling squeezed in? Thinking there’s not enough room to stretch out? Tired of listening to someone else’s music? Having trouble remembering how many of the neighborhood kids are yours because of how they all come and go?

Rest assured that there remain plenty of wide-open spaces, that not the whole world is an urban jungle. However, being aware of such a truth is not the same as seeing it.

Austin’s voters added their weight to the anti-smoking steamroller last weekend by passing an ordinance that pretty much makes it illegal to light up in the capital city, including even bars.
